Abstract : This report results from a contract tasking Harwell Laboratory as follows: The effects of radiation on electrical conductivity in ceramic insulators are briefly reviewed with emphasis on the radiation induced electrical degradation (RIED) effect in which large increases in the intrinsic electrical conductivity have been observed following irradiation within a restricted temperature range whiles subject to electric fields >600 V/cm. The aim of the present work was to extend the studies of the RIED effect to plasma-sprayed forms of alumina and spinel.
