Abstract : This reports offers an analysis of the failure of Superior Bank, FSB, a federally chartered savings bank located outside Chicago, Illinois. Shortly after Superior Bank's closure on July 27,2001, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) projected that the failure of Superior Bank would result in a $426-$526 million loss to the deposit insurance fund. The magnitude of the projected loss to the deposit insurance fund resulted in questions being raised by Congress and industry observers about what went wrong at Superior, how it happened, and what steps can be taken to reduce the likelihood of a similar failure.
