Abstract : This report is intended to show the history and experiences encountered at Watertown Arsenal in the manufacture of welded structures for 3 in. antiaircraft Gun Mounts between 1928 and 1937. All important steel castings, such as top carriages, pedestals, elevating racks, etc., for the mobile type in. antiaircraft Gun Carriages were thoroughly x-rayed before being accepted for use. Most of the castings inspected by this method were found to have shrinkage cracks in important areas, resulting in their being rejected. The number of rejections became alarming and it was evident the manufacture of such pieces by casting was very uncertain, especially when required in large numbers in time of war. It was therefore mandatory on the Ordnance Department to find some other method of manufacture that was reliable.
