Abstract : The method of spraying grooves in steel with zinc, heat-treating and machining as proposed would not be suitable for the purpose intended. Failure is due to cracks between the zinc and iron zinc alloys which permit zinc to fall out of the groove. The heat-treatment at 690 degrees F (365 degrees C) for 6 hours caused diffusion with formation of iron zinc alloys. This alloy layer was full of cracks.
