Abstract : Three shell blanks, manufactured from seamless drawn tubing for the body and dropforgings for the rear end, were butt welded by the Federal Machine and Welder Company. Three shell blanks from the lot were submitted by Frankford Arsenal in the following condition. (1) As welded, flash not removed. (2) As welded, flash removed from both interior and exterior. (3) Heat treated, after welding, according to standard Ordnance Office specifications for that type of shell. The full strength of the metal was not developed across the weld. The fusion zone of the weld was not fully cleansed during welding. During welding operations, pressure on the weld was insufficient. Welding was too imperfect to judge whether heat treatment technique was that needed to bring out properties of the weld. It is practical to improve the physical properties of these welds through a modification of welding techniques. A modification of heat treatment may possibly be required. More complete information of this process of welding will be contained in Experimental Report No. 369 which is almost complete.
