Abstract : The blueprint diagram dated 2/15/34 attached shows the location of the various areas of the oil storage tank shell from which test specimens of the welds and plate material were taken. There were four areas selected in A course, six in B course, and two in C course. These areas were selected at random from the tank shell in an effort to secure a representative average value for the general quality of the weld used in the vertical butt joints of the shell plating in the three lower courses of the tank. More tests were made of the welds in B course than of either A or C courses for two reasons. First the B course failure occurred with more force and violence than that of either the A or C courses; and second, the primary start of the failure of the tank took place in the B course. This phase of the collapse of the tank has been discussed elsewhere in the report and needs no elaboration here.
