Abstract : The third Progress Report for this project described studies of the migration rate of constituents in the chromium-plating bath. The results of these studies indicated that the experimental techniques then in use would not allow proper evaluation of the effect of sulfate and trivalent chromium in the chromium-plating bath. Experimental work has continued along the lines of studying the disposition of trivalent chromium in chromic acid solutions. A method has been developed for preparing the trivalent chromium containing material as it is thought to exist in the plating bath near the surface being plated. Experiments have now progressed to the point where it is possible to undertake further studies of the migration rate of the trivalent chromium containing material under the influence of electric current. Such measurements are expected to provide information closely related to actual plating conditions. The objective for the report period was to modify the experimental techniques so that the conditions for measuring the migration rate would more nearly approach the conditions at the plating surface during normal plating operations.
