Abstract : The purpose of this investigation was to reheat treat the Watertown Arsenal 1' Experimental Homogeneous Plates to obtain a correct microstructure and Brinell hardness according to Specification AXS-54-L. Plates which were originally brittle can be made ballistically ductile by proper heat treatment to obtain structures and hardness as specified. High temperature normalizing will greatly increase the ductility of the plate by inducing a solution of the carbides, providing the carbides in the original plate are not too large or too greatly segregated. Micro specimens taken from the edges of the plates are of no use in determining representative microstructures, and it is imperative that samples be taken in accordance with Specification AXS-54-L.
