Abstract : The original series of 15 specimens resulting from Welding Test No. 170 were tested as authorized and reported under date of 5 may 1939. Six additional specimens were later also requested. The present report gives the results of tensile tests on these later specimens. The specimens were cut from Assembly D in which preparation for the butt weld was made by facing the surfaces of the S.T.S. base metal with material of the electrode. All specimens failed either in the weld or near the edge of the weld, the fracture surfaces showing considerable porosity. The ultimate strengths of similar joints were very consistent, the average value for the machined joints being 74, 800 lb. per sq. in. and for the as deposited specimens 77,700 lb. per sq. in. The average values previously reported for corresponding joints without cladding were 86,000 and 90,000 lb. per sq. in., respectively.
