Abstract : The objective of this investigation was to investigate the suitability of the notched bend specimen for evaluating the toughness of welded butt joints made in armor plate with high-yield strength-ferritic electrodes and as a substitute for the ballistic H-plate. Bend tests of notched specimens of butt joints were made over a temperature range from 400 F to -290 F. These welds were made with experimental high-yield-strength ferritic steel electrodes and one austenitic (19-9 Mn) steel electrodes in 3/4-inch armor. Static tests were also made on notched bend specimens in 1-1/2-inch armor to ascertain the effect of specimen geometry on plastic behavior of the specimens. Preliminary preparations were made for welding ballistic H-plate specimens for study of actual ballistic performance of weld joints to compare with weld-joint performance as determined by notched bend specimens.
