Abstract : Recent research was clearly shown that modern STS plating can be satisfactorily welded with 25 per cent chromium-20 per cent nickel electrodes. When STS plating is used in ship construction, it frequently becomes desirable to weld longitudinal and transverse bulkheads and other structures directly to the STS plating. Such welding has the effect of reducing the ductility of the plating locally and thereby reducing its ultimate strength, since the embrittled region cracks before the more ductile part of the same cross-section reaches its maximum stress. Experimental tests have been conducted to show the effect of depositing a linear bead of weld on high tensile (ST52) plating. The present tests were conducted to determine the effect of welding MS transverse and longitudinal bulkheads to STS plating.
