Abstract : This report covers the modification of the Zeiss stereoplanigraph so that it will accommodate U. S. Army 6-inch focal length photography; and subsequent tests conducted to determine its capabilities in compiling topographic maps, either from terrestrial or aerial pairs of photographs. Tests were made both before and after the instrument had been modified. The purpose was to employ these findings as bases of recommendations as to the best method of using the modified stereoplanigraph in the Army mapping program. The report concludes that the modification of the stereoplanigraph as accomplished at the ERDL is satisfactory for adapting the instrument to the use of 9- x 9-inch photography with the 6-inch Metrogon lens; that control extension and plotting can be accomplished with the modified stereoplanigraph with a higher degree of accuracy than with the standard U. S. Army multiplex equipment; that vertical control spaced at 8 model intervals can be bridged satisfactorily with the modified stereoplanigraph for multiplex compilation at a contour interval of 1/500 of the flight altitude; that the modified stereoplanigraph can be used for plotting from high oblique and terrestrial photography; and that the stereoplanigraph should contribute greatly toward maintaining suitable standards of accuracy in the maps produced.
