Abstract : The Gun Steel Section of the Laboratory was requested to examine microscopically a section from a cold worked cylinder containing a checked area. The metal at the bore of the cylinder was known to be segregated and the reaction of this material to cold working was being investigated. to facilitate study of the crack the submitted section was cut up and a smaller microspecimen was prepared containing the crack and the porous area. The study of the crack indicates that a void was present at the bore of the casting during heat treatment at which time scale formation and decarburization took place. The void was not entirely removed during the machining of the cylinder preparatory for cold working. During cold working the void was further opened causing a visible check. Other checks in the cold worked cylinder may or may not have been caused by the same mechanism.
