Abstract : The Japanese Aircraft Armor Plate, varying in thickness from .517in to .526in, is composed of a chromium-molydbenum steel of somewhat inferior quality. The plate is homogeneous steel heat treated to a hardness of 495-555 Brinell. The high hardmess level to which the plate was heat treated resulted in the shattering of the plate when subjected to ballistic test. Chromium and molydbenum were not strategic elements at the time of the manufacture of this plate.
