Abstract : This report summarizes a combined analytical-experimental investigation of the enveloping characteristics of pneumatic tires. The object of the investigation was to determine an experimentally verified mathematical model of the pneumatic tire for use in simulating (mathematically) the ride responses of a wheeled vehicle traversing a rough-ground profile. Vertical forces were measured on the axle of a 4.00 x 7 tire when standing or rolling at various speeds on a large-diameter drum surface and over a short rectangular bump. Calculations of vertical forces, for conditions similar to the test conditions, were made for mathematical models of the tire consisting of linear and non-linear springs distributed around the circumference of the tire and assumed radial from the axle. It is concluded, from comparison of calculated and measured vertical forces, that the model of the tire with non-linear springs gives sufficient accuracy for mathematical simulation of the ride of wheeled vehicle. Accordingly, equations are presented for digital computation of the vertical force on the axle of a pneumatic tire traversing an arbitrary ground profile and having an arbitrary variation in axle height.
