Abstract : Fifty test panels composed of 15 ply nylon saturated with methyl methacrylate solution were made and sent to Aberdeen Proving Grounds. A number of saturants were formulated and evaluated in the light armor development and one consisting of a polyvinyl butyral solution showed promise. A number of tensile tests were carried out on various laminates and to date the methyl methacrylate laminate ran the highest, namely, 28,000 p.s.i. A combination was developed for the eye-shield that withstood striking velocities of 1810 feet per second as compared to 1755 feet per second as previously reported. The panel was approximately 2 oz. per square foot lighter in weight. Several curved eye-shields of solid clear methyl methacrylate were made and sent to Mr. Grancsay for use in constructing preliminary models of items of armor he is developing.
