Abstract : A metallurgical examination including fracture tests. Brinell hardness surveys. Charpy tests, chemical analysis and microscopic examination was made on one sample from a Cast Hull Front Section E9049, Serial No. 10, manufactured by the Gneeral Steel Castings Corporation. It was indicated that the metallurgical properties of this particular casting which had satisfactory ballistic properties were superior to those of a fialed Continental Foundry & Machine Company Front Hull Casting No. 32 which was subjected to similar ballistic tests and which ahd poor metallurgical properties. The metallurgical properties of both castings are discussed. In general, the General Steel Castings sample had a higher impact level, and showed less susceptibility to temper embrittlement than the Continental Foundry and Machine Company sample. (Author)
