Abstract : A metallurgical examination was conducted on two 3/8 inch experimental face hardened plates which were prepared by the Buick Motors Division of the General Motors Corporation under NRC Project 30. The plates were made from a low alloy rolled steel 94T20, which was gas carburized. The samples examined were of good quality rolled armor heat treated so as to have a high face hardness (700 BHN), high core hardness (444 BHN), and superior toughness in the core. These plates differed from four examined previously (Watertown Arsenal Laboratory Memorandum Report No. WAL 710/631) in that plate 600 was carburized more deeply and plate 601 less than in the previous plates.
