Abstract : To carry out metallurgical examination of armor and weld joint from the subject sample. The sample of German Aircraft Armor consisted of three rolled homogeneous 5 mm. (.208 inch) gage main plate was a .40% C, 1.72 Mn, .125% V steel formed and then heat treated to a hardness of 415/429 Brinell. The two small side plates were made of 4.5 mm. (.175 inch) gage, .40% C, 1.73% Cr steel heat treated to 429/444 Brinell hardness. Fracture tests indicated that the steel quality and toughness of the formed plate were satisfactory. The carbon content and hardness of the armor is basically equivalent to those of American aircraft armor, but the alloy analysis were probably dictated by shortages of nickel and molybdenum. The side plates were joined to the formed section by a single pass fillet weld.
