Abstract : The object of this phase of the program was to determine fracture stresses for nonembrittled and embrittled conditions of the SAE 3140 steel at strains greater than the strain normally realized in simple tension. A series of varying diameter samples (all greater than 0.05 inch) were prepared from the specified steel. The inital diameter of each specimen was dependent upon the amount of prestrain to be induced. The specimens were heat treated to produce embrittlement in one group and a condition free of temper embrittlement in the other. After heat treatment the specimens were prestrained by swaging to a common test diameter of 0.052 inch. Specimens from each prestrain group were tested in tension at temperatures of +25 degree C and -190 degrees C.
