Abstract : This report covers the investigation of twenty-seven carburized armor plates 1/4 in. 5/16 in. 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. thick made by the Buick Motor Division. The plates were subjected to complete ballistic tests including some sub-zero tests at the Ordnance Research Center, Aberdeen, and then a complete metallurgical examination was conducted at this arsenal. It was found that a Ni-Cr-Mo (NE) type steel possessed inferior ballistic shock resistawnce to a 4-5% nickel steel probably because it was not completely hardened to martensite during the quench. Plates possessing approximately a 20% case exhibited a slight superiority to the few tested which possessed a 40% case.
