Abstract : Conformal mapping was chosen as a symposium topic by the Nat'l Burean of Standards for several reasons. This is a very old and classic branch of mathematics, going back even to Ptolemy. There are many existence theorems, starting with Riemann's yet little attention has been given to constructive details. The differential equations involved are far from trivial, but they are not so complicated as to preclude the possibility fo their being handled by machines now coming into use. Many excellent mathematicians are interested in the field, and it was felt that the symposium would serve well to introduce them to, and interest them in, the use of high-speed machines for the approximate solutions of mathematical problems. Finally, there are many important physical applications of conformal mapping. Some papers presented are: On network methods in conformal mapping and in related problems; Some industrial applications of conformal mapping; Conformal mapping applied to electromagnetic field problems; Conformal mapping related to torsional rigidity, principal frequency, and electrostatic capacity; An application of conformal mapping to problems in conical supersonic flows.
