Abstract : A metallurgical examination, including fracture tests, Brinell hardness surveys, Charpy tests, chemical analyses, and microscopic examination was made on one sample from a Cast Hull Front Section E9049, Serail No.32 4-in. x 12-in x 24-in manufactured by the Continental Foundry & Machine Company. Spalling in the sample was associated chiefly with susceptibility to temper brittleness and in some degree to slack quenching. Samples 'as-received' exhibited various amounts of crystallinity distributed throughout the section at a Brinell hardness of 255-285. Samples of this material which were retempered at 1175 degrees F. and water quenched exhibited a nearly completely fibrous fracture with noticeable increase in V-notch Charpy impact values at -40 F.
