Abstract : This report summarizes the preliminary design of a platform which will satisfy the functional requirements of FPO-1 missions. The proposed platform to be designed should be capable of transporting and deploying an array (30 ' x 30' x 60' weighing 12000 lbs in air) in up to 6000 ft of water at a distance of up to 15 miles from shore; retrieving the aforementioned array for repairs transporting and deploying up to 30000 ft of cable which is stored in a reel and provide space for transporting up to 20 miles of cable which is to be stored below deck; retrieving and repairing the aforementioned cable; providing support for divers; etc. The report concludes that the engineering analysis shows that the proposed barge-like design is feasible and can carry out the specified mission satisfactorily. The author recommends that a similar investigation be done for a barge of the following dimensions: L = 138; B = 35; D = 11; and C sub b = 0.80. This is so because of the expected improvement in seakeeping and structural design (reduced beam).
