Abstract : The Navy Clothing & Textile Research Facility (NCTRF) has evaluated two types of neoprene-coated and aluminized, asbestos-aramid base fabrics (Fabrics A & B) to develop a lighter, less bulky and more flexible coated fabric than is currently used in the manufacture of shipboard firefighters' coveralls. Laboratory testing has indicated that the reduction in weight of both the base fabrics and the neoprene coating to obtain the desired comfort has in no way adversely effected the required heat-reflectant characteristics when compared with the standard neoprene-coated and aluminized fabric. Laboratory in also revealed that the lower priced Fabric A outperformed the other. Final determination as to which of the new fabrics will be introduced into the system will be based upon laboratory data and also upon the results of a planned service evaluation of prototype garments made from yardage of each of the experimental fabrics....
