Abstract : A cultural resources survey along 66 miles of proposed levee berm construction in New Madrid and Mississippi counties, Missouri, is presented. This report (Component 4), consisting of 5 levees, is part of a 217-mile survey with 6 separate components located in the states of Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, and Illinois. A total of 272 architectural and structural features was identified and evaluated. It is the opinion that none of these features is of historic or architectural significance. A total of 25 historic archaeological sites, consisting of surface scatters of historic artifactual debris, was located and evaluated. It is the opinion that 24 of these are not historically significant and do not require further assessment or mitigation. Avoidance is recommended for a single historic cemetery within the proposed right of way. A total of 34 prehistoric archaeological sites was identified and evaluated. The Crosno site (23MI1) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a portion of the site is within the project boundaries. Twelve prehistoric sites are recommended as eligible for nomination to the National Register.
