Abstract : During September and October 1981 a Phase II Testing program was initiated and carried out on 23WE605, a prehistoric archaeology site located on Wappapello Lake, Wayne County, Missouri. Under a contractual agreement between the Memphis District, Corps of Engineers and Environmental Research Center of Missouri, Inc., 23WE605 was evaluated in terms of potential eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. The following report presents the methodology incorporated in the investigation and the study The site was tested following the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Phase II Testing Guidelines and the Scope of Work under purchase order number DACW66-81-1819. Briefly, two controlled test units, bank profiles, surface observation, and limited shovel tests were incorporated in the study method. The literature/document review carried out resulted in comparable information to the earlier Brown report (1981b) which is utilized extensively. Site number 23WE605 exhibits a shallow, disturbed, low material density cultural matrix which is interpreted by the investigator as indicating insufficient potential significance to warrant inclusion on the National Register or Historic Places. It is recommended that 23WE605 not be considered eligible for nomination to the National Register and that a proposed parking area project which will impact 23WE605 proceed as planned. On the basis of the data recovered the investigators define the presence of a Woodland component (one Barnes sherd) in the site area and tentatively suggest that the area probably represents a temporary extraction related camp. No diagnostic lithics were recovered nor were any prehistoric features.
