Abstract : In this program emphasis was placed on determining the maximum single pass thickness that could be welded using a 15 k W CO2 laser. Additionally, laser welded test plates in representative aircraft materials were prepared, subjected to non-destructive examination and mechanically tested to failure. Laser welds generally equalled base metal performance in fatigue and tensile tests. The fracture toughness of laser welds and high strength steel was shown to be very high, particularly when tests were conducted in the presence of synthetic sea water.
