Abstract : This report describes the results of a two part program studying (1) the effects of Al and Nb and quaternary additions in Ti3Al base alloys on ductility and strength, and (2) the potential for superplastic forming and diffusion bonding of Ti3Al-Nb type alloys. The results show that room temperature and elevated temperature ductility is decreased with increasing Al content in the composition range 28 to 40 at.pct.Al. As Nb content is increased from zero to 12 at.pct., ductility increases markedly up to 6 at.pct.Nb, followed by a lower rate of improvement beyond 6 at.pct.Nb. It was concluded that, in the composition range studied (28 to 40 at.pct.Al and 0 to 12 at.pct.Nb), an alloy composition of Ti-28Al-7Nb was optimum as regards room temperature ductility (approximately 1%).
