Abstract : Group Technology is a philosophy of discrete batch manufacturing in which work is organized to exploit the underlying sameness between otherwise differing groups of parts. An important methodology is the classification and coding of parts in accordance with their common characteristics. As part of the ICAM Program, this report presents the results of surveys of aerospace companies regarding the needs of various departments for coding, and the parameters of parts, especially sheet metal, that should be coded. World-wide coding systems are referenced and several vendors of commerical coding systems cooperated in coding sample parts for the study. The results support the position that current coding success forms a solid base, but that further advances can be anticipated from an ICAM effort to develop an industry-wide characterization scheme, ICODE, covering processes as well as parts. Based on overlapping short code segments, the ICODE scheme proposes to resolve conflicts between the needs of departments by generating compatible codes for each use. Added flexibility should also enable ICODE to be more efficient and precise in application, as well. Recommendations are made for ICODE development by a continuation of the industry-wide coalition approach.
