Abstract : The Survivable Flight Control System (SFCS) Lightning Susceptibility Evaluation Program was conducted to assess the potential susceptibility of the SFCS circuits to lightning upset, damage, or malfunction by the use of the General Electric transient analysis technique. This was accomplished by injecting a reduced level, simulated lightning current pulse into the aircraft, measuring the voltages induced in internal flight control circuitry, and then extrapolating the results to threat level currents. This report summarizes lightning-aircraft interaction and the associated electric and magnetic coupling theory. The transient analysis test technique and test plan are described and the test results are presented. All measured voltages are extrapolated to correspond to the 30 kA (kiloampere), 80 kA and 200 kA threat levels and susceptibility estimates are presented for all circuits tested.
