Abstract : This report deals with the efforts expended during the last 27 months of a 39 month program to develop a polymeric, self-lubricating composite bearing material with a dynamic load-carrying capacity of 172 MPa (25,000 psi) at temperatures up to 316C (600F). By the use of literature data and a hypothesis, a series of model screening compounds were prepared, leading to the formulation of a final candidate designated as Hughes Advanced Composite No. 1 (HAC-1). HAC-1 consists of commercially available materials and is a simple orthogonal, 3D carbon (Type II) fiber weave reinforced, Thermid 600 based self-lubricating composite, containing powered versions of Ga/In/WSe2 Westinghouse compact and dibasic ammonium phosphate (NH4)2HPO4 as solid lubricant and adjuvant additives.
