Abstract : This study was undertaken to provide the data necessary to prepare matrix control specifications for the Hercules 3501-5A and AVCO 5505 resin systems. Matrix controls specifications are required to prevent the occurrence of variations in the matrix systems which can adversely affect the reliability, reproducibility, and durability of production advanced composite structures. The matrix control specifications for the two matrix systems were prepared by incorporating chemical analysis requirements in the existing Quality Control Plans used by the material suppliers. Resin batches with known variations in the purity and/or concentration of the various ingredients were prepared and used to produce prepreg in production facilities. All the prepregs met the requirements of Grumman's material specifications. However, some unacceptable laminate properties were observed when specimens were statically tested at 260 F (127 C) after humidity exposure. Room temperature fatigue properties of all the variations were acceptable. Neat resin, prepreg, or both resin and prepreg samples were subjected to various types of chemical analysis is to determine the ability of the techniques to detect the structurally undersirable variations. Chemical analysis was found to be very effective in detecting the variations in these matrix systems. Chemical analysis and laminate test data were then correlated to establish chemical analysis requirements to detect the structurally unacceptable variations. The existing matrix Quality Control plans were found to effectively prevent the occurrence of the undersirable variations in production resin batches.
