Abstract : Space technology is a new and rapidly expanding science. As the United States develops this technology to make more extensive use of space for communications, navigation, materials, and energy processing, it will become increasingly important to protect our national interests and investments in space. The authors review the national and Department of Defense space policy and present recommendations for change which could assure that our far-term interests and objectives in space can be protected and promoted over the next decades. This paper focuses on the arguments surrounding the case for military measures needed in space to deter and, if necessary, counter the threat to our space and terrestrial interests.
