Abstract : The overall objective of this program was to produce two prototype units designated as Autoscan I and Autoscan II, and four production Autoscan I's for use during the C-5A Structural Information Enhancement program (SIEP). The overall objective was met. The success of Autoscan I has resulted from the incorporation of many features not found in earlier devices including focused transducers; improved boot design; eddy-current centering; direct-reading mechanical adjustments; a large, refreshed-CRT display; stored data with automatic or manual plotting; scan interlocks; and a convenient support device. These and other innovations resulted in a rugged, field-usable system which is capable of reliably detecting radial fatigue flaws as small as 0.030 in. in the material surrounding installed fasteners. Initial evaluation of Autoscan I on samples containing induced fatigue cracks indicates a 95% probability of detection of a 0.030 in. or larger fatigue crack with a 95% confidence level. When the instrument is used in the manner set forth by SRL, the false-call rate is virtually zero. The intrinsic sensitivity of the instrument allows detection of fatigue cracks considerably smaller than 0.030 in.
