Abstract : Experimental antimalarial drugs were assessed for their blood schizontocidal activity in the Aotus trivirgatus - Plasmodium falciparum - P. vivax model. WR 242511 and WR 238605, both 8-aminoquinolines, cured blood-induced P. vivax infections, when administered at doses of 1.0 and 4.0 mg base per kg (x 3 days), respectively. Both drugs cured P. falciparum infections, but at doses greater than required for cure of P. vivax blood infections. Two thiosemicarbazones, WR 231010 and WR 235591, were ineffective against infections of the Uganda Palo Alto and Vietnam Smith strains of P. falciparum. WR 24696, an indolquinoline, had minimal activity against parasites of the Uganda Palo Alto strain and no activity against infections of the Vietnam Smith strain of P. falciparum. Assessment of two acridinols, in progress, indicated that one, WR 250547, cleared parasitemias of the chloroquine-resistant Vietnam Smith strain when administered at doses of 1.0, 4.0, or 16.0 mg base per kg (x 3 days).
