Abstract : The purpose of this program is to evaluate the efficacy of candidate antiviral compounds against a spectrum of viruses of military importance. This program involves (a) primary testing of chemical compounds and natural products for antiviral efficacy in vitro using CPE-inhibition and plaque-reduction assays, (b) primary testing of compounds for antiviral efficacy in vivo in animal model systems, and (c) secondary evaluation of the active candidate antiviral compounds. The target viruses for invitro testing are Vaccinia Virus (VV), Adenovirus (AD), Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV), Punta Toro Virus (PT), Sandfly Fever Virus (SF), Yellow Fever Virus (YF), Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus (VEE), Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JE), Pichinde Virus (PIC), Hantaan Virus (HTN), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and related murine, feline, and simian retroviruses. The current in vivo systems are Pichinde Virus infection of hamsters and Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus infection of mice.
