Abstract : Seven compounds were submitted for screening as potential antivirals during the reporting period: adenosine-2'-monoaldehyde (AVS number 4526); 5'-deoxyadenosine-2',3'-dialdehyde (AVS number 1214); 5-iodouridine-2-3'-dialdehyde (AVS number 1217);purine riboside-2'3'-dialdehyde (AVS number 5053); 5-iodouridine-2'-monoaldehyde (AVS number 5052); adenosine-3-monozlcdhyde (AVS) number 5219); and 5'-amino-5'-deoxyadenosine (AVS number 5220). The most notable achievement was the synthesis of adenosine-3'-monoaldehyde by: selectively blocking the 3'-aldehyde group of adenosine-2',3--dialdehyde with N,N'-diphenylethylenediamine; reduction of the intermediate 1,3-diphenylimidazolidine derivative with sodium borohydride; and deblocking the resultant adenosine-2'-hydroxy-3'-(1,3-diphenyl)-2-imidazolidine with p-toluenesulfonic acid.
