Abstract : The object of this contract was to develop biodegradable, controlled -release microcapsule formulations for the topical administration of antibiotics to prevent infection in wounds resulting from warfare. The formulations being developed contain biodegradable antibiotic microcapsules that can be administered by means of a shaker-type dispenser or an aerosol spray. The ability to maintain the antibiotic at the wound site for an extended period of time ensures direct contact between an effective amount of antibiotic and infecting microorganisms. In this approach, the ideal mode of antibiotic delivery would be a single, local application with a programmed delivery of antibiotic, whereby an initial burst of antibiotic is released for immediate tissue a profusion followed by a prolonged release of antibiotic which maintains an effective level of antibiotic in the tissues for up to two weeks.
