Abstract : The purpose of this project was to demonstrate the utility of the Interference Slide Optical ImmunoAssay (OIA) for the detection of an infectious agent. Samples were examined for direct presence of antigens specific to the infecting organism, or for the host response to the infection. The scope of the project was to demonstrate the utility of this novel detection method in two viral disease models, Junin and Hantaan viruses. The Hantaan viral antigens were coated to the Interference Slide and control samples examined for the presence of IgM or IgG class antibodies specific to the virus. Antibodies to the Junin virus were coated and control samples examined for the presence of Junin antigens. Control samples were serum or buffer based and are appropriate clinical or reference samples for these types of infections.
