Abstract : The purpose of the research effort was to demonstrate the feasibility of producing a powdered quaternary ammonium-peroxide (QP) formulation (sometimes referred to as Ultra-Kleen ) for use at ambient temperature as a sterilizing agent for dental instruments. Microbiological efficacy tests were conducted to assess the efficacy of QP against B. subtilis, C sporogenes, and M. bovis. Kill curves at several use dilutions of QP were generated. In suspension, a 15% solution of QP exhibited sporicidal activity against both B. subtilis and C sporogenes, although some tailing was observed for C sporogenes. In these suspension tests, the D value for B. subtilis was 15.3 minutes, and for C sporogenes 67.9 minutes. A 15% solution of QP was tested, with an exposure time of two hours, against B. subtilis and C sporogenes dried on carriers, using the AOAC sporicidal test. Positive carriers were observed for both types of spores. The Quantitative Tuberculocidal Test (performed according to EPA guidelines) was performed using a 10% solution of QP. In this test the minimum required 99.9% reduction in organisms was achieved, with an exposure time claim calculated at 2 hours, 45 minutes. While the QP formulation tested established sporicidal activity, further work must concentrate on optimizing the technology to enhance penetration through dried medium on carriers.
