Abstract : Morphological analysis of thermodynamic machines shows that there are three major elements that are utilized by every type of engine; thermal energy recovery heat exchangers (recuperates, regenerators); electromechanical energy convertors (linear or rotary moving coil, moving iron, or moving magnet motors/alternators: and bearing systems (fluid, rolling element, electromagnetic, flexure). One particularly interesting class of engine is based on resonant linear reciprocating mechanisms, the most typical using flexure bearings and a moving coil linear motor/alternator. While all of the components could be improved, the linear flexure bearing system is the one most In need of refinement. This Phase I SBlR program was conducted (1) to define the basic research and development necessary for the development of a universally applicable linear flexure bearing cartridge technology, (2) to demonstrate the feasibility of critical elements and processes, and (3) to prepare a Phase II proposal for fabricating complete prototype cartridges.
