Abstract : An analytical method is presented for determining the stress-strain response to ultimate laminate failure for a laminated composite consisting of orthotropic lamina which have nonlinear stress-strain behavior. The technique is restricted to the prediction of ultimate strength for plane anisotropic laminates with midplane symmetry subjected to biaxial membrane loads. The assumption is made that any degradation which occurs due to lamina yielding or lamina failure is restricted to that lamina and is not transmitted to adjacent lamina. A comparison of the analytical predictions with some empirical data for cross ply, angle ply and complex laminates of boron-epoxy is included. The comparisons demonstrate that the analytical technique will reproduce a laminate stress-strain curve to ultimate failure in a satisfactory manner. The analytical technique has been programmed for an IBM 360/65 digital computer. The computer program, sample program output and utilization instructions for the program are included in this report.
