Abstract : The invention relates to the preservation of blood. More particularly, it relates to a process for freeze-preservation of blood at low sub-zero temperatures in which a solute additive is used as an extracellular protective agent for the erythrocytes. A water-soluble hydroxyethyl or hydropropyl starch is used as cryoprotective agent for erythrocytes in the low sub-zero freeze-preservation of blood. The cryoprotective agent is an extracellular solute and is metabolized in the blood stream.
