Abstract : This invention relates to improved processes for the manufacture of trinitrotoluene and dinitrotoluene. At present, 2,4,6,-trinitrotoluene (hereinafter referred to as TNT) explosives are generally manufactured by a 3-stage process wherein toluene is reacted with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids. It is a broad object of this invention to provide methods of manufacturing TNT wherein the use of H2SO4 is not required. Another object is to provide methods for the manufacture of TNT wherein a 1-step nitration process only is required. Still another object is to provide methods to efficiently convert toluene to DNT by spent acid formed in our 1-step nitration process above mentioned. Briefly, the authors have discovered that toluene and a mixed acid consisting of BF3 and HNO3 can be reacted to yield 86.4% of TNT having a purity of about 92.5%.
