Abstract : The patent describes a method of forming a precision geometrical pattern of apertures in a plate comprising the steps of coating an optically polished plate of metal such as copper with a layer of nickel or chromium and coating the primary layer of nickel or chromium with a thin layer of gold; forming the aperture pattern in the gold layer using conventional photo-etching techniques; and removing the nickel or chromium and the copper from the aperture area by etching. The article thus formed is a heavy copper ring having a central opening across which extends an ultra-thin film of gold precisely apertured in the desired geometrical pattern.
