Abstract : The patent describes a method of forming an optical radiation waveguide integral with a glass substrate in combination with a coupler for coupling optical radiation into the waveguide. The waveguide and coupler are formed by thermal diffusion of ions in glass and the coupler may be shaped by inserting the glass into the solution a certain distance to form the waveguide with additional insertion of the substrate into the solution for shaping the coupler.
