Abstract : An electro-optic modulator is used to modulate coherent light beams by the application of an electric potential. It combines a Fabry-Perot etalon and a diffraction grating in a single unit. An etalon is constructed with an electro-optic material between reflecting surfaces. A voltage applied between alternate, spaced-apart electrodes of a metal grid attached to one reflecting surface induces a diffraction grating in the electro optic material. Light entering the etalon is diffracted, reflected and efficiently coupled out.
