Abstract : In the patent application alpha titanium or an alpha-plus-beta titanium alloy is heated in a hydrogen atmosphere under conditions such as to convert it to beta titanium or a beta titanium alloy which is then hot worked to provide an article of a desired shape. Thereafter, hydrogen is removed from the shaped article, thereby converting the beta titanium or beta titanium alloy of the article to alpha titanium or an alpha-plus-beta titanium alloy. In the beta condition, titanium or titanium alloys offer less resistance to hot working than do alpha and alpha-plus-beta phase materials. As a result lower deformation loads are required to produce desired shapes. Titanium shapes are extensively used in aerospace applications.
