Abstract : The patent application describes a variable area combustor that permits combustion to be optimum at all engine speeds. The combustor includes a combustion chamber in which at the forward end there is a rotating fuel cup. The fuel enters the combustion chamber by a scroll shaped inlet within the fuel cup and is connected to a fuel manifold and surrounding the fuel inlet there is a circumferential series of air slots. Air also enters about the outside of the fuel cup through a plurality of vanes that are pivotally controlled to vary the entrance of air. The vanes are rotated in the opposite direction to that of the fuel cup. A dilution port is provided at the side of the combustor to control combustion pressure and the activating of the dilution port can operate integrally with the varying of the pitch of the vanes.
